Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day

earth day

Happy Earth Day! The very first celebration of the holiday was in 1970, so 2020 will be the 50th anniversary. This year’s official theme is climate change. It’s a great opportunity to take some time to enjoy nature and reflect on how we can do our part to take care of our planet.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Getting outside is a wonderful way to spend Earth Day and, conveniently, Baltimore is home to some truly beautiful parks. Take a walk, enjoy a picnic, bring your yoga practice outdoors, or play fetch with your furry friend…there are plenty of fun things to do while enjoying the outdoors.

One of Baltimore’s most popular and spacious parks is 55-acre Patterson Park. Take a stroll around the reservoir at Druid Hill Park for beautiful waterfront views! You can enjoy the fresh air and soak in the sun in the fields. At Federal Hill Park, beautiful city skyline views are an excellent backdrop for a peaceful nature walk.

Connect with nature and appreciate the natural beauty that can be found just down the street.

Taking Care of Our Planet

Another important part of an Earth Day celebration is thinking about how we are impacting our environment. Consider cutting back on single-use plastic, as this is one of the most common (and easy to fix) sources of waste. Switch out items in your home for eco-friendly alternatives, like reusable water bottles and zip pouches. Repurpose empty jars as planters or storage for your desk or bathroom. Thrift clothes on sites like Poshmark or Depop, or consider donating your clothes to local organizations that need them. Get creative with it! There are so many simple ways that can save you money and help the Earth.

Every small step you take towards sustainability helps our planet and our future. There are lots of simple switches you can try out and together we can add up to make a big difference. Of course, it’s also great to recycle what you can (here’s a great guide to what can be recycled in our city!)

Bring the Outdoors In

Plants are a great way to bring appreciation for the outdoors into your apartment. They not only make your home inviting and add a stylish decor element, indoor plants can have health benefits like decreasing stress, improving concentration, and even clearing toxins from the air. Don’t have a green thumb? That’s okay! Try low-maintenance plants like succulents, spider plants or fiddle-leaf figs.

Local businesses are offering delivery, so you can pick up your new plant right to your doorstep. B. Willow has a curated selection of houseplants including beautiful air plants, cacti, and more for delivery. Plus, you can order any of the essentials you might need, like a watering can, planter or soil. With same-day delivery from Flowers and Fancies, you can order a beautifully arranged terrarium, succulent pot, and more! Have a home improvement project you’ve been meaning to tackle? Now’s a great time. Canton Ace Hardware has free shipping, so you can stock up on plants and tons of other home essentials.
